Liverpool take on Sevilla on Wednesday night at the St Jakob-Park Stadium in Basel as they look to clinch their first European silverware since that memorable night in Istanbul in 2005 to clinch the UEFA Champions League. Meanwhile, Sevilla are hoping to win the Europa League for an elusive third time in succession and fourth time in their history.

Despite the stadium only holding 38,000 fans the two sets of supporters are in buoyant mood and will certainly create a fantastic atmosphere both in the stadium and around the city.

Tens of thousands of fans both with and without tickets will travel to Switzerland for the final and there is plenty of useful information here to help you get the best out of your trip to Basel.

Kick-off for the Europa League Final between Liverpool and Sevilla is 20:45pm local time and all supporters are advised to arrive at the ground in plenty of time with turnstiles opening at 17:45pm.

The City:

Basel is located in the north west of Switzerland, bordering France and Germany. The famous Rhine river also flows through the city and splits it into two parts. Grossbasel (Greater Basel) is where the Old Town is situated and Kleinbasel (Little Basel) is the more modern side of the city with many bars and nightclubs.

The city cathedral is located just off the main square, Marktplatz and there are plenty of museums in the city (40 in fact!), especially in the city centre where the Kunstmuseum Basel can be found. This museum includes the work of Picasso among its famous artwork.

Getting there:

If you haven’t booked flights yet you will be paying over the odds to get there to catch the game, however, there are many options to get to Basel.

Flying direct to EuroAirport located between Basel, Mulhouse and Freiburg on the Swiss, French and German borders is the main mode of travel and can be reached directly with flights from Manchester and London.

Flying to Geneva is another viable option for supporters and this is a popular route which can be reached directly from Liverpool  and London where Basel is a short train journey away.

Zurich is also another Swiss airport which can be reached from from Manchester and London before a short train trip to takes you into Basel once in Zurich.

For more adventurous supporters in and around Europe you can drive from Paris, Stuttgart, Milan, Cologne and Frankfurt, with Basel within driving distance.

Getting Around:

Tram is the best mode of transport to get around the city. For all travelling supporters it is worth noting that on matchday, transportation to and from the stadium is free with all valid match tickets for fans. This not only will be able to get you to and from the stadium, but also to the fan meeting points in the square and fan zone areas.

Basel SBB is the city’s main train station and the St Jakob-Park Stadium is a short 20 minute walk away. Regular bus services will also operate on matchday to and from the train station making your trip hassle free and simple.

UEFA have also set up fan meeting points for fans in Barfusserplatz where they can then take the number 14 or number 11 tram services to M-Parc, which is a short distance from the stadium. Fans can also take a 40 min walk from Barfusserplatz Square to the stadium too if they wish.

If you are after something to eat or drink, you are best heading towards one of the city’s three main squares: Claraplatz, Barfusserplatz and Munsterplatz where there are plenty of bars and restaurants to suit everyone’s taste.

Fan Zones:

The night before the game, Tuesday 17th May, there will be a neutral Fan Zone open until 10pm in Munsterplatz which is south of the Rhine river.

In a further effort to accommodate fans and neutrals, two main viewing areas have been set up in the city with two big screens to watch the 2016 Europa League Final between Liverpool and Sevilla.

The two viewing areas are in Barfusserplatz, the main Liverpool supporters meeting point and Marktplatz which is bang in the city centre and is a more neutral fan zone of the two.

Sevilla fans are due to meet in Claraplatz square in Basel, however because Sevilla did not sell their full ticket allocation for the stadium UEFA don’t plan on screening the game here.
