Leicester City have completed the biggest shock in sporting history after being crowned Premier League champions.
The Foxes narrowly avoided relegation last season but Claudio Ranieri has transformed the side into title winners after starting the campaign 5000-1 outsiders to finish top.
The triumph caps one of the greatest sporting moments ever as Leicester City became the first side since Nottingham Forest to win the Premier League title for the first time in their 132 year history.
Leicester’s dream came true last night after Tottenham Hotspur failed to beat their rivals Chelsea after surrendering a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at Stamford Bridge. Eden Hazard superbly curled home a dramatic late equaliser in an ill-tempered game which included twelve yellow cards.
Harry Kane rounded Asmir Begovic and tapped into an empty net to put Spurs ahead. Son Heung-min then doubled Tottenham’s lead before half-time after coolly slotting home to keep their title hopes alive.
Eden Hazard’s introduction appeared to galvanise the Chelsea team and Gary Cahill pulled a goal back after slamming the ball home from a corner to give Chelsea, and Leicester City, hope.
The game threatened to boil over as tempers flared following an altercation between Danny Rose and Willian close to the touchline. Spurs boss, Mauricio Pochettino intervened before Moussa Dembele appeared to gouge Chelsea’s Diego Costa in the mele. Rose and Willian were both carded as a result, however, Dembele’s behaviour went unnoticed but he is almost certain to face disciplinary action.
As Tottenham looked for a third goal, it was Chelsea who fought back to leave Spurs title bid in tatters and break Tottenham hearts.
Hazard curled home to hand the title to Leicester City in what was the Belgian’s first goal at Stamford Bridge since last May, when he scored the title winning goal for his Chelsea side.
Hazard’s goal sent Leicester into dreamland as the current Leicester squad gathered to watch the game at Jamie Vardy’s house.
Leicester’s fairytale story is complete and they are set to be crowned champions at their final home game of the season versus Everton at the King Power Stadium at the weekend.
Following their triumph, social media was sent into meltdown as the world reacted to the news.
Lifelong Leicester City fan and Match of the Day presenter, Gary Lineker posted on Instagram a picture celebrating with a glass of champagne saying: “Yes! Just Yes! Leicester City are champions!”
David Beckham also posted: “Wow, who would have known that a few years on from his dad winning Premiership after Premiership that Kasper would lift the same trophy...What an amazing moment for a team that many people have said ‘what a surprise’-but out of any team this season Leicester deserve this moment.”
Prime Minister, David Cameron also posted a message on Twitter: “Many congratulations to Leicester. An extraordinary, thoroughly deserved, Premier League title.”
The Leicester City party has only just begun as players and fans reflect on what has been an unbelievable achievement.
Claudio Ranieri and his squad of players have become history makers and their story will be told for many more years to come in what has been a fitting ending to a magical Premier League season.
